What is Rosemary Extract?

Rosemary is a perennial shrub of the dicotyledonous family Lamiaceae. Studies have shown that the main chemical components in rosemary extract are rosemary phenol, carnosol and carnosic acid, etc., which are widely used in the fields of food industry, medicine and cosmetics. Rosemary antioxidant is currently recognized as the best natural antioxidant in the world. The main chemical components and pharmacological effects of rosemary extract were briefly described, in order to provide reference for the efficient development and utilization of rosemary plant resources.

Rosemary extract composition

At present, dozens of compounds with obvious antioxidant activity have been isolated from rosemary, including various substances with different polarities and solubility, including polyphenols, diterpenes, flavonoids, and even some volatile components, etc. They work together to achieve a “synergistic” effect. The reason why rosemary extract can show excellent antioxidant activity in various food fields is inseparable from its complex antioxidant active components of.

Among these antioxidant active ingredients, three are the most representative ones: carnosic acid (Carnosic Acid, CA), carnosol (Carnosol, CN) and rosmarinic acid (Rosmarinic Acid, RA). Among them, the first two (carnosic acid and carnosol) are oil-soluble, and their total content is often abbreviated as CA+CN, which is the detection index of the oil-soluble dosage form of rosemary extract. And rosmarinic acid (RA) is water-soluble, for water-soluble rosemary extract formulations, rosmarinic acid is usually selected as the detection index of active ingredients

Application of Rosemary Extract

1. Water-soluble rosemary leaf extract (rosmarinic acid): mainly used in the preservation of aquatic products, natural pigments, oral liquids, shower gels, shampoos, beverages, alcohol and transparent packaged foods.

2. Fat-soluble rosemary leaf extract (carnosol): widely used in oil and oil food, chemical industry, cosmetics and feed, it is a natural green food additive.
